Aura is delighted to announce that its bid partners (which include Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, DONG Energy, University of Sheffield, Durham University and the University of Hull) have won one of eleven Prosperity Partnership bids. The announcement this evening (13th July 2017) by Jo Johnson, Minister for Universities and Science, at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)[1] launch event in London shows how industry and academia can work together to ensure that the UK continues to lead the world in offshore wind energy research and innovation.
The funding for the research totals £7.6 million with contributions from EPSRC, industry and academic partners. The integrated programme of research will address fundamental challenges in:
Development of novel generators and converters;
Structural health monitoring of wind turbine blades;
Novel condition monitoring and fault detection techniques and technologies;
Investigation of novel blade and foundation technology.
Aura is a collaboration between major companies in the offshore wind industry, leading academic institutions and government and non-governmental organisations. It aims to act as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation to support the sector’s growth. The Aura partners’ vision is to create a world leading offshore wind research, talent and innovation hub supporting the developing offshore wind sector towards sustainability, establishing it as a vibrant industry in the Humber – the UK’s Energy Estuary, for the benefit of the region and the country.
